NEW MODERN

Perhaps it’s the nostalgia that fuels us, or our optimism for what’s to come, but we constantly find ourselves thinking that 12-year old us would each think that we are the band of their dreams, after all, New Modern is a passion project made up from all our musical influences.

Whether it’s the unbridled passion Arcade Fire exude, the tight arrangements the Strokes excel in, or the unquestionable versatility Muse possess, we want to create a sound that can characterize our influences in a modern setting and there is no better city than Columbus, Ohio. Like the Seattle’s grunge scene, or NYC’s post-punk revival scene, Columbus’ alternative scene is brewing up some fresh music. Alongside some other great artists, we’re striving to help put it on the map.

I’ll be the first to admit it – I’m a former failed musician. See, I think you can only fail at your passions if you let them go and, unfortunately, I did that for most of college career but if something truly is your passion, you’ll either find yourself running back to it, or it’ll find you again in one way, shape, or form. For me, that was the moment I saw Arcade Fire in 2017 at Lollapalooza, and as much as they are relentlessly vulnerable, it was their intrepid optimism that reminded me why I love this and won’t stop.

Growing up wanting to imitate bands like Interpol and Arctic Monkeys, I knew I had to embrace my influences and create a project that was unmistakably passionate. I am humbled now to say that I am New Modern’s lead singer and guitarist - no longer a failed musician.

Eric Stratton (he/him)

Hello! I’m Eric Stratton and I play bass for New Modern. I grew up in Westerville, Ohio, and I went to Otterbein University for classical bass performance and jazz studies. I enjoy listening to and playing all kinds of music but I always come back to rock as one of my favorites. I also enjoy playing in symphony orchestras and musical theatre performances.

My influences are constantly changing, but the ones that have been most impactful have been Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Meshuggah, and Karnivool. Outside of music, some of my interests include video games, just about anything sci-fi, and hanging out of with my cats.

Niki Weber (they/them)

Hi what’s up I’m Niki! I love hiking! And dogs! And cats! And good vegetarian food! And cool books! And art!

There’s so many things to love.. I’ve been playing music since I was 13. Really wanted to play guitar but I found drums were really fun. Why not do both!! I took some private lessons and ended up going to school for music because I liked it so much.

I always think it’s important to keep an open mind, and to be able to let things fall into place. It’s so much harder than it sounds, but its fruition is euphoric!!
